I don't know about you, but that's what fasting is all about for me -- getting more of God. And I do know from past experiences, that God rewards fasting with a greater sense of His presence and a greater knowledge of His heart and ways. In other words -- we will possess Him in ways we haven't before. I hope to get a big enough drink of the Living Water that I too feel inebriated by my possession of God. I love the way Eugene Peterson puts Jesus' words on the subject:Those who feast are empty and famished, whereas those who fast become inebriated by their possession of God.
When you practice some appetite-denying discipline to better concentrate on God, don't make a production out of it. It might turn you into a small-time celebrity but it won't make you a saint. If you 'go into training' inwardly, act normal outwardly. Shampoo and comb your hair, brush your teeth, wash your face. God doesn't require attention-getting devices. He won't overlook what you are doing; he'll reward you well. (Sermon on the Mount)
